After skipping the December release, Google is seemingly rolling out the January 2023 Play system update to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series. Several users have confirmed receiving the update in recent days, suggesting it to be a wide rollout. This month’s Play system update brings new developer features, Matter and UPI QR scanners, Play Store improvements, autofill improvements, NFC restrictions for passes in Google Wallet, and some critical bug fixes.

Google releases monthly Play system updates for Android devices. These updates bring changes, improvements, and new features for various system apps, components, and services that make the core of Android OS. However, the monthly releases don’t always arrive on time. Sometimes, the company takes longer to roll out the latest update. For instance, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 lineups have been waiting for the December 2022 release for about two months.

It turns out Google has skipped last month’s Play system update for its past two generations of Pixel smartphones. It is now rolling out the January release. The new update for the Pixel 7 Pro reportedly weighs 63MB, while that for the Pixel 6 weighs 58MB (via). It should be a similar-sized update for other devices in these two lineups, including the Pixel 6a. You can check for Play system updates by navigating to Settings > About phone > Android version on your Pixel. You should see the Google Play system update option under the Android security update.

Some Pixel users are still stuck on the November Play system update

Despite picking up a new Play system update, some Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 users have noticed that their phones are stuck on the November release. The new update doesn’t seem to bump the devices to the January release. It’s unclear whether it’s a bug causing the Play system version to show incorrectly or their phones haven’t received the January update. Hopefully, the word has reached Google and it is working on a fix for this issue.

Some Samsung users have been having a similar issue as well. They haven’t received new Play system updates since the July 2022 release. Even if the phone shows a new update, installing it doesn’t change anything. The Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, and Galaxy Z series foldables are among the affected devices. There’s no evidence yet that confirms these Play system issues on Pixel and Galaxy devices to have stemmed from the same root cause. We will let you know as soon as we have more information.
